Translated to Yoruba by Ayobami Temitope Kehinde (17/08/2020)

Alleluia! Sing to Jesus,
His the sceptre, His the throne;
Alleluia! His the triumph,
His the victory alone.
Hark the songs of peaceful Zion
Thunder like a mighty flood:
‘Jesus out of every nation
Hath redeemed us by His blood.’

Alleluia! Not as orphans
Are we left in sorrow now.
Alleluia! He is near us,
Faith believes, nor questions how.
Though the cloud from sight received Him
When the forty days were o'er,
Shall our hearts forget His promise,
‘I am with you evermore’?

Alleluia! Bread of Heaven,
here on earth our food, our stay;
Alleluia! Here the sinful
Come to Thee from day to day;
Intercessor, Friend of sinners,
Earth’s Redeemer, plead for me,
Where the songs of all the sinless
Sweep across the crystal sea.

Alleluia! King eternal,
Thee the Lord of Lord’s we own;
Alleluia! Born of Mary,
Earth Thy footstool, heaven thy throne:
Thou within the veil hast entered,
Robed in the flesh, our great High Priest;
Thou on earth both Priest and Victim
In the Eucharistic feast.

My Notes

Hullo there! I am glad to present to you the Yoruba version of the hymn Alleluia! Sing to Jesus!.

I attended an Anglican Mission secondary school and we used the Ancient & Modern hymn book for our morning assemblies. Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! used to be one of my favourites among the numerous hymns we sang back then. Surfing through the internet, I found a lot of altered versions but I chose to stick with the original version as found in Ancient & Modern because I have sung it that way over the years and have been blessed.

As touching the translation, it was tasking. Imagine interpreting "Robed in the flesh, our great High Priest" literally, the words would be too much and would not fit into the music for the line. Thank God for the wisdom to translate by the Holy Spirit.
